Vallelunga beckons: Austria Formula Cup returns to Italy after the summer break

Round 04: Austria Formula Cup – Vallelunga (ITA)

After a break of more than a month, the Austria Formula Cup returns to the racetrack this coming weekend. From 2 to 5 July 2026, the formula racing series will be making a guest appearance as part of the Topjet Formula 2000 at the historic Autodromo “Piero Taruffi” in Vallelunga, around 30 kilometres north of Rome. Drivers, teams and fans can look forward to the continuation of what has been an exciting season so far, as engines are finally revved up once more at one of Italy’s most famous circuits.
Following the eventful races at Grobnik, attention now turns to the fourth race weekend of the Austria Formula Cup. In Vallelunga, the series will once again face a top-class international field of competitors. A total of 23 cars provide the perfect conditions for a varied race weekend featuring thrilling battles for position and an impressive array of technical diversity.

The focus will be on the cars competing in the Formula 3 Cup, Formula 3 Trophy, Formula Regional and Formula Light Cup. The Formula 3 Cup, in particular, boasts a strong line-up and promises top-class motorsport. With Andrea Benalli for Puresport, Sandro Zeller for Jo Zeller Racing, Marco Falci for ASD Autodromos – Nannini Racing and Christof Ledermann for Franz Wöss Racing, numerous established drivers will be lining up on the grid. In the Formula 3 Trophy, André Petropoulos for Team Hoffmann Racing – following his strong performance at Grobnik – is once again among the drivers who will be in the spotlight. The different generations of Dallara cars and various engine set-ups once again highlight the wide technical diversity within the starting grid.

The “Piero Taruffi” Autodromo is one of Italy’s most historic circuits and demands the utmost precision from drivers over the full race distance. Challenging combinations of corners, varying radii and very few breathing spaces make the circuit a real challenge. In addition, the weather is likely to play a decisive role. Forecasts predict glorious sunshine and temperatures of up to 34 degrees Celsius. Teams and drivers can therefore expect a real battle against the heat, in which not only the equipment but also the drivers’ physical endurance will be put to the test.

The race weekend begins as early as Thursday with the mandatory drivers’ briefing, before the engines are finally revved up again on Friday. Three free practice sessions at 09:00, 12:00 and 17:25 will give the teams ample opportunity to set up the cars for the demanding conditions at Vallelunga. Alongside the Topjet Formula 2000, the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia in particular will provide a top-class supporting programme and promises spectators a varied motorsport weekend of international calibre.

Saturday – Qualifying and the Sprint Race kick off the race Weekend
Saturday is all about the first decisive sessions of the weekend. Following Friday’s free practice sessions, qualifying gets underway at 09:00, with the starting positions for the races at stake for the first time. This is followed in the afternoon at 1.45 pm by the first race of the weekend. The 20-minute Sprint Race promises thrilling battles and close duels right from the start. Given the high temperatures expected, good tyre management and a smart race strategy will be key factors alongside sheer speed.

Sunday – Feature Race marks the highlight of the weekend
Sunday finally brings the racing weekend at Vallelunga to a close. The 30-minute Feature Race gets underway at 11.10 am, with the drivers once again battling for vital points and positions.
In the expected midsummer conditions, it is not just speed but, above all, consistency, tyre management and error-free driving that could decide victory or defeat. Following the long break from racing, everything is now set for an exciting return of the Austria Formula Cup. All times are subject to change.
